Hello,
i have this small book from Monty for a while now:

Elmer Takeo Kudo

KINKO SHAKUHACHI:
One Maker's Approach

Shakuhachi Master Craftsman

Yoneda Chikamitsu

The maker seemed to be very serius and seasoned, yet he didn't sign his flutes for many years (he throw his hanako away according to the book).

So i wanted to ask if anyone knows more about him? his hanako and his flutes?

thanks.

Hello, I have read your question.
I have scarcely any information on the shakuhachi maker Yoneda Chikamitsu.
But I looked for it. I found the following site might be useful. These articles are written in japanese, so I transleted some sentences in English although I'm poor at English.
I hope this useful for you.
http://d.hatena.ne.jp/yamaguchishiro/20120302/1330706704
Yoneda Chikamitu used to make pre-perfect shakuhachi for Yamaguchi Shiro.
After Ymaguchi Shiro died ,He had brought some of his made shakuhachi to Yamaguchi Goro' house every Monday. Ymaguchi Goro play these shakuchi and gave him some advice. That shakuhachi were "Selected Shakuhachi by Goro".
He died November 28th 1987.

おそらく石碑に刻まれていたのだろうと思いますが、雑誌「三曲」には以下の名前が「丸一派」として記されています。
○針谷岩雄○堀 芳治○東島磯一郎○千金楽七三郎○米田親光
Perhaps these were craved on a stone, following names were written as "Maru-school".(Shakuhachi maker's school or teaching group)

This book is available to buy at shakuhachi.com. A scanned copy would be illegal. People who write and publish books need to make a living! If people keep scanning and illegally sharing books such as this, writers will not bother writing them!

OK thats your stand and i respect it. I live in a trird world country and have not enough money to buy things like that. This means access to materials are only for those who can pay for them? sorry i do not agree. Creative Commons is a good example about this copyright thing. If writers do not want to write because money does not come so be it. But you know? "illegal" copies in music issues for example, has mate musicians go more on tour and concerts, thus being more musicians...
Anyway there are a lot of materials on how to make a Shakuhachi, for the sake of art, for the sake og music, and for the sake of keeping the tradition alive not just for the sake of money. Good i could have access to them, good we were thus able to make our own shakuhacio, otherwise we could not afford it.
Greetings, and again, i do respect your point, just that it is not mine...
Having said this, i amnot interested debating this oint so for me this is the end of this dialog...

People trying to make one's leaving with the shakuhachi have also often very hard times ;-)
It's everyone own's decision to decide giving the things he/she made for free or to ask people to pay for it.
It depends on the author economical situation.
Considering the authors I know in the shakuhachi community I have never met one that wants to become rich with books... Writing such books would not be the good solution;-) And very often askink people to pay for the book just covers the fees of editing them...
That said I also dream of a world where every art resource would be for free... And why not other things;-)...
Peace to everyone...

It would indeed be tragic if those who cannot afford such materials will always be denied them. However, there are a few ways by which a person without adequate funds could legally, and perhaps more importantly, ethically, obtain such materials. For example:

  • Contact the copyright holder or a distributor explaining your predicament and politely request for a copy of the book, perhaps with promise of future payment, or payment in kind, or at least some token of gratitude.
  • Explain your predicament in a forum like this and request for a used copy of the book.
  • Use crowdfunding, e.g., create a campaign at GoFundMe, presenting your situation to all who might be interested to help do a good deed by supporting your quest to become a shakuhachi maker to contribute to the shakuhachi community, and to music in general.

However, these only apply if the copyright holder has licensed the work under a Creative Commons license.

No, that would be sad and have a negative impact on the shakuhachi community, not "so be it".

Totally agree with Eugene. I would add that the observation of Philip Horan is not just "his point" or "his stand" as implied Metal Tiger. It's a reminder of the law.

Does anyone have a flute of Yoneda Chikamiutsu and is willing to post some close-up photos?
I have 3 Goro-sen (selected by Goro) flutes and I would like to search for similarities.
