Hi,

I writing a bachelor thesis about Shakuhachi and Fujara (Slovakian flute) discussing gender and sexuality.

Do you know the source of the anecdote about Watazumi opening windows in a recording session, saying that only then they will capture the true sound of the shakuhachi?

Many thanks,

Marek

Phil James recounts the anecdote in his pamphlet “Listening” but doesn’t name the source. According to version given by Phil, when the windows were opened at Watazumi's insistence the traffic sounds all but drowned out the sound of Watazumi’s shakuhachi making it virtually inaudible. When the "commercially unviable" tape was played back to Watazumi he purportedly uttered “perfect”, which seems open to more than one interpretation.

Google's cache seems to have saved it, but it may be wise to copy it before the cache expires: The Buddhist Musicianship Series: Listening

Hi again,

can someone point me to thesis by Joshua Smith Shaped by the Wind: Artistic and Cultural Identity Formation of Shakuhachi Players?

I think, I've read it years ago, but my memory fails to tell where did I find it.

Many thanks again,

Marek

I found this: His myspace site:

https://myspace.com/sumisujoshu

and his eMail:

sumisujoshu@hotmail.com

Found here:

http://www.tourguidejd.com/tourguidejd/deploy/infopacks/docs/jd_infoPack_23…

This info is from Oct2008, it might be outdated. With some luck you can contact him directly.

Edit: The eMail seems to be valid. It is the same as in his profile on the flut portal. http://www.fluteportal.com/links/28

Thanks I've tried contacting Josh via FB as we happen to be freinds.

Thanks for that article, I have read that. I think in his thesis he explores the theme of shakuhachi being stigmatised for young musicians a little bit more in depth.
