This is a hanko on a very nice old 1.2 shakuhachi with an old make-shift utaguchi made from "clear" tortoise shell. Does this read Itsukizan?

Thank you. What does Chou mean? I wonder if anyone knows of the maker who used this hanko?

朝 can be pronounced chō or asa/ashi and means morning in the most used meaning.
It can, however, also mean dynasty; reign; period; epoch; age and court.
Ahhh.. these kanji! Smile

Kinda makes you wish they were more like Fender, Gibson, Martin, et al. That's easier to identify than could be morning or could be court.

Brian, it is not as difficult as you think if you don't speak Japanese. The meaning kind of gives itself in the context used most of the times.
The character doesn't change meaning in it self, but in combinations with other characters.Smile

I doubt that Kiku because nobody I know in Japan can identify the hankos unless they have seen them before and know who the maker is. Evil or Very Mad

My god. I can start a fight anywhere.

"Morning in the Mist Mountain" sounds good. He could make a nice flute

Every time I have shown a hanko to a Japanese person (if they don't know the hanko already) they say: Could be Misty Mountain could be Wind of Void, very difficult!

Oh-oh, that is not sound of shakuhachi

Trembling echoes though mist-covered mountains
Old monk
Just passing water.
