Hi everyone

Would someone happen to know more about the film that seems to be titled 'Wandering Komuso' and is on Youtube in 3 short extracts at the following links? It looks like a very cool story and I'd love to find the film and see it, but I cannot find any details anywhere, and the poster of the videos does not respond to queries. Thanks.

Peter, I believe they're excerpts from the series of 5 films directed by Uchida Tomu based on the life of Miyamoto Mushashi and released in English as "Ultimate Samurai Miyamoto Musashi".

Rick, thanks very much! You're right. I really appreciate the information.
I managed to download the complete set and those 3 scenes are extracts from the 4th film, called "Miyamoto Musashi 4: The Duel At Ichijoji" from 1964. The series is really interesting but I'm a little disappointed to find the Komuso was only a minor character, and not the focus of his own story.
Do you know of any Japanese films that feature a Komuso character?

Peter, if you wander over to Mujitsu and Tairaku's Shakuhachi BBQ website and look under "History", you'll find a few titles mentioned under the heading "Komuso in movies".

Hi Tenderfoot
I got it from a bit torrent, at the link below. Of course I'm not condoning illegal downloading, but some old material like this cannot be found for purchase or rental, so this is the only way to see it. The entire set of 6 films (2 of the films are in 2 parts, hence 8 pieces of film in all) plus the subtitle files. The quality is good enough considering the era in which it was made. The komuso character appears several times throughout the 4th instalment and possibly the later ones which I haven't gotten through yet.

Peter-san,
That are excerpts from no.4 films of Miyamoto Musashi(Battle in the Ichijo-valley) as Rick mentioned.
I have the video.
The period of the film is early Edo one.
The Komuso is Aoki-Tanzaemon ,the father of Jyotaro who is Musashi's desciple.Under unavoidable circumstances Tanzaemon can't meet to his son. He retreated unwillingly. I feel for him.
In the excerpts a wandering man say,"Shakuhachi-sound reminds me of my mother and I can't stop crying."
Music in the films is not a original music piece(Koten). In that period there isn't any Miyakobushi-scale (minor Japanese scale). And there any long-shakuhachi as Tanzaemon plays. In 1600's Komusou-shakuhachi is generally short than 1.8 shaku. There is no 7-nods shakuhachi, it a Miyogiri-shakuhachi(with 3 nods).
By the way that is a touching scene.
Kishi Kiyokazu( Kinko-style and Hitoyogiri player)
