Hello,

somewhere I read that besides of the writings by Hisamatsu Fuyo is one of the most important books about shakuhachi a book by Kobata Suigetsu.
I tried the internet to find some more information about Kobata Suigetsu, but with poor results.

Does anyone know this author and his book? In advance thank you very much for any info.

Regards
Petr

Hello,
I'm glad to see that you are interesting in Kobata Suigetsu sensei(master).
I'm an aquentance of Mr. Wada Shingetu和田真月 who is the son of Kobta Suigetsu木幡吹月.
That book is origianly series of article titled "Shakuhachi Kokin shu尺八古今集" or A collection of shakuhachi of ancient and modern times, in the Shakuhachi Monthly(月刊尺八)in 1951.
A few years ago Mr. Wada rewrited it in more clear japanese, not for sale.
I was presented some copies by him and wrote my impresson on it, following. ( Now I have just one of that book. )

He was a very contentious person and pissed off the shakuhachi establishment as well as many individual shakuhachi masters and players. And entire schools like Kinko and Tozan. Some of his theories included that Kinko-ryu sensei should drop everything except Shika no Tone, Hachigaeshi and Yugure and study Fuke-shu. Tozan is too florid. Westerners should not play shakuhachi because shakuhachi is intrinsically Japanese. He was also a proponent of jinashi. Interesting and provocative person.

I'd love to know what exactly was too florid about traditional Tozan music? Some of the great Kinko masters prettified their music so much with their little yuri and pops and furi and nayashi and more pops and more yuri and flourishes that I could scarcely imagine music more florid!

I have a book "Shakuhachi Kokin-syu" written by Kowata Suigetu, so I'm glad to explain this matter a little.
Some say that traditional Tozan music is too florid especially in San-kyoku三曲or Koto-Shamisen-Shakuhachi ensemble music.
On the contrally Kinko-style in ensemble is simple and good.
That is a matter of aesthetics. It depends on each person.
At least Kowata criticizes the Tozan ensemble style.
Here is a interesting recording. You will find an answer in it.
Thanks.
