Hey,
I breathe through my nose like 99% of the time because I consider it to be the good way to breathe.
You have a nose for something right? To filter some of the air before it enters your lungs.

But I notice that I can inhale a lot faster and sometimes it seems deeper when I inhale through my mouth then when I inhale through my nose?
This could be very useful for faster phrases

How do you guys/women breathe when you are playing shakuhachi?
How do you guys/women breathe when you are playing shakuhachi and have a cold/feel sluggish/etc.?
It is very important as the shakuhachi well... is a wind instrument.

I'm pretty sure most of the breathing in will go through the mouth. To use the nose requires a shutting off of the back of the throat, for me at any rate, and that doesn't feel natural at all. As for faster pieces I think that nose breathing would compromise the piece.
I think also that breathing is a personal habit that will determine how you approach playing, and will itself change somewhat as you progress. You might want to read some interesting replies in "It's ok to take a breath" in Playpen.
All in all, I think the mouth breathers have it!

As for playing when I'm not well or I'm bunged up with a cold....I don't play.

I think I tend to breathe through the mouth when playing. From what I understand, breathing through the nose would be required for a circular breathing technique.

From a professional view point, breathing only through mouth or only through nose, is either no good.
I usually explain to my students that breathing should be used through mouth at first and nose next.
I call it the two steps breathing.
When you make a sound and come to the note's end, you feel you have some air in belly. You must exhale that some air, so, immediately fresh air comes in your belly. At this time you close your mouth and inhale air through your nose. That is perfect breathing. It's good for health and instrument breathing.
Please try this method, and notice me your impressing.
Thanks.
