Dear friends,

I would like to disclose to you some of the details of Prague Shakuhachi Festival 2011 25-29/08. Many of you send us emails asking what is happening in Prague August 2011 and we kept you waiting, unsure of what our budget might look like. But then, upon receiving grants from the City of Prague and the Czech Ministry of Culture we are finally ready to unveil some of treats we have in store for you.

The year 2011 is the fifth year of the event. To celebrate this sort of an anniversary we wanted to get someone very, very special to visit Prague.
Sakai Shodo, an exquisite player, head of the Chikuho-ryu, a man with great knowledge of vast honkyoku repertoire and indeed one of the living greats of the shakuhachi world, accepted our invitation. To mix up the game a bit, Steve Cohn, a great improviser and a player whose music is as intriguing and powerful as some the finest abstract paintings, will come from New York. Together with our regular guests, Christopher Yohmei Blasdel, Jim Franklin and Vlastislav Matoušek, they will show you the labyrinths of Japanese and contemporary music.

Invited players and teachers:

Sakai Shodo - head of the Chikuho-ryu, great player of traditional and contemporary music and the permanent director general of Kyochiku Zenji Hosankai. Sakai Shodo will also arrive with his student Nakamatsu Kaiho who will accompany him in some of the pieces. www.chikuhoryu.jp

Steve Cohn - a shakuhachi player, pianist and above all a master of improvised music that goes well beyond jazz or anything you can imagine Wink www.thestevecohn.com

Christopher Yohmei Blasdel - Renown Kinko Chikumeisha player based in Tokyo and a Yamaguchi Goro student; Christopher will teach sankyoku and Kinko-ryu honkyoku, he is the author of the book Shakuhachi: Manual for learning www2.gol.com/users/yohmei

Jim Franklin - shakuhachi player and a composer interested in shakuhachi and electronic music; Jim will teach Katsuya Yokoyama honkyoku and contemporary music www.bambooheart.com

Vlastislav Matoušek - shakuhachi player and a composer; his avantgarde compositions are played by some of the finest ensambles including the Barton Workshop and Pro-musica Nipponia. Vlastislav will teach his own compositions. www.shakuhachi.cz

Naoko Kikuchi - up and coming koto player; especially skilled in ensamble and contemporary music; Naoko will be joining the sankyoku lessons and will teach koto beginner and intermediate classes. www.naokokikuchi.com

...more artists are still being negotiated

The festival will take place, like last year, at the Music and dance faculty of the Academy of performing arts (HAMU), located in the Prague historical city centre. You can look forward to many concerts, lectures, individual lessons and other interesting program.

We think that one of the most beautiful aspects of playing shakuhachi is the sense of comunity which just vibrates throughout the entire festival. Through the generous gifts from members of the international shakuhachi comunity, the festival is able to provide scholarships to those players who would love to come but don't have the resources to do so. Please inquire if you are in a such situation.

The appliactions are now online and you can decide to pay via bank transfer or paypal.

Cheers,

Marek Matvija

Hi Mareck, to add to your metaphoric description of Steve's sound, I would say he is the Jackson Pollock of the shakuhachi world, bravely brandishing wild, energetic splashes of adventurous tones. His playing shows a kind of freedom that can happen when personal vision breaks the boundaries of tradition. Anyone with an open mind will benefit from his workshop.

Aside from an "out of this world" sound, Steve is also one cool cat!

I had a great time last year in Prague, learned a lot and was very inspired!
Cannot decide yet to travel, but might enroll later when things are more clear.

Prague is a great city, and the atmosphere in the conference is great.
Lots to listen, to play, to learn, to see and to talk about with shakucompadres.....

Hi,

please check-out the festival program; we have two premiere pieces, sound-art and audio-visual performances, improvised and, of course, Japanese music.
www.komuso.cz/en/festival/program/25

The list of pieces which will be taught you can find here: www.komuso.cz/en/festival/courses
If you wish to be part of a course at the festival, this is the time to book.

Cheers,

Marek
