The UN general assembly is in session this week in New York City, wreaking havoc with traffic everywhere. Visiting are the new Prime Minister of Japan and his wife, Mr. and Mrs. Noda. It seems Mrs. Noda is a music lover and took an interest in the Columbia University Hogaku-Gagaku program. Yesterday she (and her entourage) came to the class and met with the teachers and students, and... I gave her a shakuhachi lesson! Yes she did get a sound, and pronounced me a good teacher. She was very nice. Here's a photo with one of the koto students.

Ahah! Maybe it was just a coincidence but I saw a guy walking towards Columbia U. yesterday with a T-shirt that read "I'm Gaga for Gagaku." _________________ "A hot Dog is not an animal" - Jet Yung Blog on shakuhachi, art and parenting - www.yungflutes.com

...and I played a concert in our Prefectural concert hall today as part of a wagakki orchestra which included a hichiriki player in full gagaku regalia. Now those dudes (and dudesses) know how to wear hats!
