Dear all,

A while back I visited an abandoned US Listening Station at Teufelsberg near Berlin - the space has a lot of natural reverb. I played and recorded shakuhachi in the main dome and released it now as a limited CD edition.

You can find some further info and audio extracts here:

Also here is a direct link to a video of playing in the main listening dome of the station:

Thanks for listening and if you have any questions please let me know. Thanks.

Thorsten

Thorsten, eerie cool improv, enjoyed listen to it! A listening station put it to good use, now it really listening. If that is part of the dome on the floor in front of you, it might also be dangerous too.... blowing those big harmonics in that space, take care.

I like the live exploration of acoustic spaces with the shakuhachi, its more organic than studio effects, kind of like Jinasti verses Jiari hidden, unexpected resonances and sounds. I've wondered what a shakuhachi player placed in a unfamiliar acoustic space ,in darkness or blindfolded, and asked improv or find the good sound, what would they would select to play? what could it tell you about the space?

"The Listen Station", Shakuhachi Zen meets Cold War, great name and cool space, you could turn it into a night club..... might be on to a gold mine for you. Besides the shakuhachi and tea house angle has been done man.

Cheers

Thanks for the feedback Gary and I like your idea of blindfolded playing.
The idea of exploring a space like this kind of reminds me of echolocation - maybe the shakuhachi could be of use there. I suppose a basic ro would be a good starting point for 'sensing' the space.

Did you mean those pointy, spiky things….?
In any case it is not a particular safe space all together, although once one has navigated the staircase, almost in darkness, the dome itself seems reasonable comfortable.
