Small scale Shakuhachi Summer School in London
Shakuhachi: The universe within a single tone 14 – 15 Jul 2012, 9:00 - 17:00
Teachers: Adrian Freedman and Kiku Day
Course description:
The focus of this summer school course will be exploring and go deeper into the understanding and possibilities of koten honkyoku. We will look into the different repertoires of the two teachers and the use of the music in meditation. We will also investigate the possibilities of creating something new with the idiom of honkyoku.
Bios: Adrian Freedman studied shakuhachi in Japan from 1990 to 1998 with Katsuya Yokoyama. He specialises in the koten honkyoku repertoire as taught by Yokoyama. He is also a composer incorporating the shakuhachi into new music with other non-western instuments such as kora (African harp) tabla ( Indian drums) and oud (Arabian lute). He currently lives in Dartington, Devon. www.adrianfreedman.com
Kiku Day studied shakuhachi in Japan from 1989 to 2000 with Okuda Atsuya. Kiku specialises in koten honkyoku in Zensabo style and new music - both composed and improvised. She has a PhD in ethnomusicology from SOAS and is a founding member of the European Shakuhachi Society. www.kikuday.com
Hope to see lots of you there!!! |

Hello all,
For those who are in England and could be interested in this Shakuhachi Summer School, which is a part of the SOAS World Music Summer School in London, where Adrian Freedman and I will explore the idiom of honkyoku, please read on:
At the Summer School I will for the first time teach mindfulness meditation combined with honkyoku playing. Many talk about they use shakuhachi for meditation but so far I have so far not seen anybody concretely discussing how to combine meditation and shakuhachi playing together. And since I am in the process of becoming a mindfulness instructor I thought it would be a good opportunity to take that first step combining shakuhachi playing and meditation in teaching.
I hope to see many of you there:

| Unfortunately I can't make this, and I can't speak for Adrian having never met him, but Kiku is a fantastic teacher/player. If anyone on here is considering going, GO! |

Hello Kiku, This has been my experience as well. Very glad that you're exploring this. Wish I could be there for the workshop. Perhaps you all will come to NYC? |

Hi Kohl, I'd love to go to NYC ! But no plans for now. LowBlow, I don't think we will record this time. But perhaps in the future. I have the feeling that Adrian and I will work more together.

Hi Kiku,
Looks very interesting - which pieces will be studied in the group sessions?
Thanks Thorsten |

Thanks, Rodrigo!
Thorsten, As Adrian and I share quite a bit of repertoire together, we thought we will play it by year - also depending on the people joining us. We may do things like comparing playing styles of the same piece (and this could certainly be pieces that some of you have already played) and we will also divide people, so hopefully there will be enough new pieces too! I haven't yet settled on the pieces but have a few in my mind. You can suggest! |

So... the small local but cozy London Shakuhachi Summer School 2012 has taken place. It was very interesting to share a workshop like this with a person who is also passionate about honkyoku! Adrian Freedman was very interesting to work with - a musician of many capacities! It was a new experience for me as well to dare to focus so directly on the spiritual aspect of shakuhachi playing. My first mindfulness meditation and shakuhachi playing session went well - despite the fact that I was worried about it and hardly slept the night before... I hope to explore this avenue more in the near future.
Here is a picture of an "Otodamahō" session Adrian led. Otodamahō is a shinto meditation on sound.
