As some of you know, I am now in England and will be for a while. I will be available in lessons here, I am also available for online lessons as usual via Skype.

I teach pretty much the entire Koten Honkyoku repertoire - over 100 pieces - having studied from the top masters of all of the ancient regional honkyoku styles. Some of the music which I teach is extremely rare. My speciality is in the unique histories, characteristics and differences between the regional styles, including playing styles, notation systems and instruments. I am very happy to share with diligent students who have a love of shakuhachi.

I have been taking skype lessons from Justin for some months now. For me, Justin is a balanced teacher which is a very agreeable quality in a shakuhachi teacher. He is personable and yet stern when it comes to insuring that you, the student, understands or performs correctly. I greatly appreciate his balance between explaining things and demonstrating them or "feeling" them out.

If you are more or less a beginner Justin will give you a solid foundation in pitch, body related concerns such as breathing, traditional music, and history. As an experienced shakuhachi player I am grateful beyond words to Justin for making all of these forms of shakuhachi music available to me in addition to teaching me a number of other things about playing shakuhachi and its history.

Prior to Justin I studied Jin Nyodo style for three years until the end of '08, and, until recently, I have been more or less on my own with some lessons with Michael Chikuzen Gould. So I am drawing from these previous experiences when talking about Justin as a teacher. Initially what drew me to Justin was my curiosity in the old unique regional "flavors" or styles of honkyoku across Japan, which, previous to Justin, were not available to learn outside of Japan.

For me, hearing the honkyoku "Ajikan" played by its composer, Miyagawa Nyozan (1868 - 1946), opened my eyes to styles outside of what I had first endeavored to learn (Jin Nyodo). I first heard the original Ajikan played by Nyozan here: http://www.sepia.dti.ne.jp/shakuhachi/myouanryuu/nyozan/ajikan.mp3 which is on the popular shakuhachi LP website http://www.sepia.dti.ne.jp/shakuhachi/index-e.html

However, rather than jump right into these more complex "eccentric" pieces/styles I took Justin's advice to begin with Seien ryu honkyoku which are the original Fudaiji pieces, e.g., Kyorei, Takiochi, Mukaiji, Koku, among others. I want to point out that Justin always gave me the option to choose what style to learn and continues to do so which I feel is very kind. It is a joy to learn these original Seien ryu Fudaiji pieces and it continues to give me more insight into the versions re-arranged/composed by Jin Nyodo and others such as Watazumi. In other words, it is such a great privileged to learn the pieces or styles that inspired the "greats" such as Taizan, Nyodo, and Watazumi.

I feel very privileged and happy to be able to take lessons under Justin and I plan to continue to do so for some time.

When you say "taking lessons" does that mean you are now living in Europe?

To update you all, my new website is here:
http://senryushakuhachi.com/

These days enjoying running a healthy shakuhachi here in London in my dojo and also through skype. Teaching mostly Seien Ryu and Kimpu Ryu, with some students studying Chikushinkai (which some of you know by the name KSK or Dokyoku), Shimpo Ryu, Kyushu and others. If you ever email me and do not get a response within a few days, it does occasionally happen that new mails go to the junk folder, so please then look me up on facebook, send me a friend request and then mail me through there.
