The World Shakuhachi Festival 2012 was a great success - as those of you who were here in Kyoto with the rest of us know. What a great pleasure it is to among so many shakuhachi lovers from around the world.
Okay

Europe has been buzzing with shakuhachi events since spring... There have been several ESS related event as this is the year where ESS do not organise a big event but several smaller and more local events in Europe. We have had the Japanese Shakuhachi Spring in Spain with visits of Kakizakai Kaoru and Chiku Za, The KSK Workshop at the border between France and Germany, and Koichi Yoshida's visit to France. Now entering the summer season some of the yearly events will happen: The London Shakuhachi Summer School, The Swiss Chikuyusha workshop and Prague Shakuhachi Festival.

Don't forget to look for events at the ESS website: http://shakuhachisociety.eu/events.html Mr. Green

Then the biggest news from Kyoto is that the ESS and the Prague team will in collaboration host the World Shakuhachi Festival 2016. We have a lot of work in front of us and a big responsibility. But I am sure that - together - we can make a wonderful event here in Europe. There are a lot of shakuhachi activities here in Europe, so we have a lot to offer - and many of us have strong ties to Japan... Soon we have to begin planning how to go about organising such a huge event. We have to decide what do we want out of a World Shakuhachi Festival held in Europe? What can we add to the great events that has carved such a wonderful tradition of festivals and how can we be an inspiration for future events?

Many more questions will need to be reflected upon!

For now I will enjoy the post WSF12 day and go to the honkyoku concert in Takatsuki between Osaka and Kyoto!!! Wink

See you at some this summer's events in Europe!

Kiku - yes, that is really good news to have the WSF16 in Europe! I'm looking forward to that.
Out of curiosity, how is it decided where the next WSF will be held?

There is no committee as such that decides these things (like the Olympic Committee)... Until now it was in reality just the person who said they will do it that got the gig. But this year we had both a bit from Europe and from China. We will have to figure out how to figure out who will host the future events. This time around there was a meeting with as few persons as possible. And the agreement on Prague 2016 and China 2018 was made very painlessly.

Well, since it's the "World" shakuhachi festival it makes sense to finally go to Europe. And China will be good, in six years there may be 10,000 players there. The only other zone that has shakuhachi and hasn't been represented is South America (Brazil). The next North American one should be in Canada.

There was a voice up about Brazil as well for 2016... and there is a whole shakuhachi scene going on there. So it will be great to have it in Brazil after China. Let's see!
Then we just need the African continent... Smile
