Apply completely and liberally around the bindings.

I found that you can do clean work quickly and easily (relatively speaking) if you have a shakuhachi making hako - box. You can hold the brush still over the bindings with one hand while rolling the flute with your other.

You can make a temporary one from a shoe box.
