Would a shakuhachi notation app. for iPad/iPhone be something useful to the community? There are many of us who spend the majority of our digital lives on smartphones and tablet devices and although it's a very niche market app. it could prove useful to both teachers and students alike.

It could offer all the main notational styles and then input from a graphic-based keyboard?which would include ornamentation and rhythm symbols specific to each style.
Vertical text input with columns running right to left as per standard scores.
Scores could be saved as PDF or JPEG suitable for printing or posting on websites.

Perhaps this could be funded via Kickstarter?
maybe there's an app. developer within the shakuhachi community?
This would certainly not be a moneymaking app. but it could be useful.

What do people think. Mad idea or useful tool for the community?

That's a fantastic idea!
I am a software tester and I would be glad to donate my services to such an endeavour Smile Although I do not know anything about App development... How hard could it be?

I guess I'm a professional app developer now that I have a client, but when I tried to think of how I could extend my fingering chart app to do it the big snag in the design phase was at the point of printing out a hardcopy of the output. I've gained some experience with PDF document writing since then so that may not be insurmountable and since I also figured out how to create font sets..., I'd have to look into that some more. There were also some problems in that some notations would be much less difficult than others as some are very "art of calligraphy" oriented so do not loan themselves well to computer generation and the notation I chose for what I already have is one of those.

Maybe as part of a team I'd be willing to donate some time, but as it is my current professional and personal workload (elderly parents are time consuming) are too much to consider it as a labor of love. Christian Grossmeier, who used to be on the BBQ, is a very talented programmer. If you contacted him he may be willing to help out, and I would highly value the experience I would gain from working with him. But from what I have looked into, it is not something that can just be slapped together. It looks to me to require a team with someone with project manager skills and at least two, maybe three programmers, and probably a few solid weeks with late nights.

Most here are probably already familiar with my beginner explorations in AJAX (or kind of, there isn't much power on the server side there!) with my fingering chart app: http://shakuhachi.atspace.cc/online_finger_chart.html

I like the kickstarter idea, as some dollars would take the sting off the hours required. But still, it is a bit beyond my skill set to go it alone, particularly if this is to be a mobile app.

I would love a tuner that will show the correct shakuhachi notation, not western letter.
Like the tuner that exists for pc :-)
