Today I tried to go through Sankara Sugagaki and in the middle of the piece I suddenly felt a firm physical tide of anxiety and panic. I do not remember feeling anything like this before when playing. I then settled myself woth long tones, but I still was quite frightened.
Why did it happen? Did anybody experience anything like this? How did you cope with that? How to prevent this effect? Could be the reason a flu I had some days before?
Please talk to me about this.

A member of another online message board community that I frequent recounted what sounds like a similiar experience recently: What the heck happened to me? Whether it be a panic attack, a mild heart attack, or some other reason, I think that it would not hurt (other than the wallet) to see a doctor for a check up, just in case.

Shakuhachi is a powerful thing, similar to yoga or acupuncture, which could also release blockages and cause anxiety.

Hello Galina... I don't play the piece, but maybe you hyperventilated? That can cause panic attacks. If that was the case long tones may not have been the best choice. I would suggest if it happens again that you concentrate on relaxing and observing, and control the fear reaction... maybe then you can create enough "space" to observe if it is physical or emotional, and where it's located in your body. Awareness is always the key!
Also, if you find that the experience prevents you from feeling at ease playing your instrument for fear it will happen again, you might create an issue bigger than it need be. In this case talking to your doctor may make you feel more relaxed about the whole thing.

Doctor does not know anything about shakuhachi and may prescribe not to practice at all just to play safe.

What does it mean for me? Just to proceed being more careful and attentive?

Thank you! I see much sense in your comment. Awareness, that's the important thing.
