My sheet music regularly drifts off the sides of my standard width portable music stand. I longingly think of my friend's music stand, lightweight and with an extra wide accordion style folding sheet music holder. I think he bought it years ago while traveling in Japan.

Any suggestions where I might get a music stand like that: extra wide, foldable, and, hopefully not costing an incredibly huge sum of money?

Thanks Brian.

Shipping costs more than the stand itself but I may just have to bite the bamboo and go for it!

Hi Erin, I have friends that go to Japan often and they always ask if they can bring something back for me. Perhaps you have generous friends?
Also, if you have a choice between the metal and aluminum, I would get the metal. The aluminum is light which is great for travel, but can't withstand any wind (but so would the playing! Wink

The aluminum one is lame. Get the steel one. Usually when I order from Mejiro I wait until I "need" some CD's, notation, utaguchi covers, cases or bags, books, etc. to justify the shipping. Buying one item is not practical. Or maybe if you know other shakuhachi players in your area you can group your order and share the shipping. Anyway you look at it Japanese stuff is always expensive.

If you need a temporary solution while you're waiting for a new stand, try this: take two A4/Letter-sized pieces of heavy cardboard, and hinge them together at the short end with tape. You now have something you can fold up to carry around in a regular binder, or fold out into a two foot long sheet music rest, which you can then put on top of a much narrower music stand. You could also make something similar but much classier out of lightweight wood (brass hinges, etc.) if you had the time and inclination.

Also, if you can get hold of one of those long paperweights they use in Japanese calligraphy, they work great to hold everything together and to hold sheet music down in the wind. Like this: http://item.rakuten.co.jp/shuyodo/bu1/

My regular music stand is actually a little wooden one that was basically built to koto player specifications (their music is in booklet form and they turn the pages as they play, so their stands don't need to be very wide). I combine this with the cardboard underlay + paperweight, and it works great, even playing outside.
