Hi everyone, this is my first post on this fantastic forum!

I'm an italian musician and teacher and a beginner flute maker. This summer (from 8 to 22 of July) I'm going to visit some towns in Japan (Tokyo and Kyoto, Nara, Kamakura..)
I would really like to enjoy traditional japanese music, especially gagaku but I would appreciate also other kinds. Does anyone know where I can find any concert?
Or if there are some places where japanese musicians usually play it?
Really really thanks for your attention!
Cheers

Andrea

Hi Andrea,

Welcome to the forum. I have a friend who's playing in a big Tozan-ryu event coming up soon, in Tokyo. If the dates are within your schedule I'll let you know. Take care.

How do you do, andrea-san,
Welcome to Japan, this July.

I'm a shakuhachi teacher and player, live in Osaka Japan.
My mane is KISHI KIYOKAZU(貴志 清一)

I read your post and found that you want some information of Japanese traditional music and so.
Althouth I have few such information,I'll try to list up some music event.

From 8 to 22 of July,16:00
(In Tokyo)
1.( you are very unlucky, but for reference)
July 7th, Gagaku-concert by Tokyo-gakuso(or Tokyo-gagaku-emsanble,professional)
fee:5000yen(oh, very high price)
venue:Tokyo-opera-city-concert-hall(Shijuku)
tel:03-3560-3010(more detail)

2.July 9th, Shakuhachi concert 18:30
player:Tokumaru Jumei(National Fine Art of University,teacher )
Fujiwara Dozan (Young Shakuhachi player(I don't like his style but he has a excellet technique)
fee:4000yen
venue:Kioi-hall(Chiyoda-ku)
tel: 03-3237-0061

3.July 20th, Japanese traditional music guide-concert 11:00 & 14:00
content: 11:00 Hayasi(Japanese festivals or dramas small emsanble)
& Koto, Shamisen
14:00 Koto,Shamisen, Jyoruri,Shakuhachi
fee:2000yen(11:00),3000yen(14:00)
venue:National Theater(Chiyoda-ku)
tel:03-3230-3000

(In Kyoto)
Non: Because there is the famous Gion-maturi(festival) in July.
Perhaps professional players who live in Kyoto are occupied by that festival. Gion-Matsuri dates back to 1500 year. It continues for about 500years .
But if you don't care of the tremendous crowd (about 2or300000 person),Gion-festival is worth for seeing.

(In Nara) I can't find any good concert.

(In Osaka)Osaka is next to Nara or Kyoto. Its transpotation is very convenient.
1.July 6(SAT)14:00
Bunraku-su-jyoruri no kai(Bunraku=Japanese pro pupet drama)
su-jyoruri is just only story-telling and acompanied shamisen.
This concert don't have any pupet performance.
fee:4000yen
venue:National bunraku-theater(Osaka-city)
tel:0570-07-9900

They are the concerts that I recommend.

And if you want to listen to my Honkyoku-shakuhachi playing, that's ok.
But I live in the suberb from Osaka city, so transportation is not convienient. And nowaday you can listen to shakuhachi Honkyoku in Europe.
In case of your-disire to contact me ,it's my pleasure to see you at my Shakuhachi stadio and please send e-mail to me.(kiyosan@dune.ocn.ne.jp)
address:Japan Osaka-prefecture Sennan-city Okada,2-190-7(日本 大阪府 泉南市 岡田2-190-7)

So I really want that you have nice days in Japan.

Sincery

PostPosted: 2013-08-02, 00:32    Post subject: My Japanese Experiences Reply with quote

Hi everyone!

I would like to share my Japanese experiences..
well, there would be a lot of things to say about my trip in Japan!
It was wonderful! Wonderful places but above all wonderful people!

The Shakuhachi concert on the 9th of July was great!
http://www.kioi-hall.or.jp/20130709s1830.html
especially 'cause with 4 players it was so rich and varied.
and it would be difficult to say what I liked more.

The Workshop with John Neptune was amazing!
John's such a nice person, it was very interesting and pleasant to work with him!
and I suggest anyone to make it. for me it was simple to follow and very "straight to the point"!
maybe if anyone would like to make it, I find it's better to take a long time to choose the (right) piece of bamboo before starting the workshop.

I would really like to thank Scott, Lawrence and Lindsay for telling about these events and help me a lot with them.

Thanks also to Kishi, the Gion Matsuri in Kyoto was great! and very crowded as you told me!

I also succeeded in enjoying a Gagaku concert in Tokyo at the Akasaka Kumin Center Hall on the 20th. I always find Gagaku so deep and fascinating..

IMPORTANT to any european going to Japan in the near future: please take a lot of CASH with you! I got bad misadventures in trying to get some cash in Japan with my cards..
And unfortunately I lost hours and hours of my trip for that.. Maestro european cards don't work and some Visa neither..

except for this it was really a great experience, thanks again to anyone who make it be that way!

Andrea
(sorry for my english)

p.s. if anyone would like to ask me anything about anything.. it would be a pleasure for me to be helpful!
