One month to go to our Early Bird deadline on Paddy’s Day, March 17! During the next month, I will introduce our performers and some of the pieces they will teach and perform.

We are delighted to welcome Jin Rei, the grandson of Jin Nyodo (1891-1966) to Dublin. He will give a talk about his grandfather’s legacy and teach two of his original compositions, Daiwagaku (composed in 1941) and Mujushin Kyoku (composed in 1937). The use of the daikan register (autocorrect wanted this to be the daikon register!) in this latter piece will be a challenge for all taking this workshop.

Yamaoka Yozan

For the first time, the ESS summer school will feature a leading player from Brazil, Yamaoka Yozan. A Tozan-ryū player but also versed in many other styles of honkyoku, Yamaoka is a central figure in the popularity of shakuhachi in Brazil, the country which has the largest Japanese diaspora outside Japan. He will teach a varied collection of honkyoku including Daha and a duet version of Kumoijishi.

We are very fortunate to have Mizuno Kohmei, a student of the late Yamaguchi Goro and the current head of the Chikumeisha guild at the ESS Dublin summer school. He will teach Chikumeisha honkyoku and sankyoku.

David and Gina Barnes

As well as their expertise in Japanese min’yo, they also have a rich repertoire of Irish tunes and songs. The summer school’s main gala concert will feature David and Gina collaborating with Irish musicians who know some Japanese tunes. Gina will teach a beginner class on the Irish tin whistle as well as beginner shinobue for taiko players. David will also bring his sanshin and teach some Okinawan tunes.
