There will be shakuhachi in the min'yō performance on the SOAS World Music Stage at Bloomsbury Festival 20-21 Oct 2012
The shakuhachi will be played by Joe Browning!
On the 20th at From 17:00-17:30 there will be a performance of Japanese folk music, featuring the amazing Yoshie Asano-Campbell. Yoshie taught and performed at the European Shakuhachi Festival in London last year. She has won several national min'yō competitions in Japan and is also an amazing min'yō singer. We are lucky to have such a person in Europe! She will be backed by the tsugaru-jamisen player Hibiki with further support from David Hughes, the minyō expert, on shamisen and song and his wife Gina Barnes on shinobue, and Sylvia Woolridge, who is a British opera singer and min'yō singer. Also she has won several competitions in Japan.
It is in this context Joe Browning will be accompanying on shakuhachi including the "takemono" which is min'yō singing backed up by only shakuhachi. Usually these pieces are "free rhythm".
